Honoring Athletic Achievement, Scholarship, Community Service and Character

Blake Barry

A 1982 graduate and multi-sport athlete, Mr. Barry was inducted into the Wylie Hall of Honor in 2008. He played football, basketball and baseball for all four years and ran track for two of those years. He was a varsity team member for three years in football, basketball and baseball where he was an All-District selection during his Junior and Senior years in three sports - football, basketball and baseball. He played alongside fellow 1982 graduates and hall of honor teammates Kyle Craighead, Daniel Jones and W.C. Nix. He was coached by Hall of Honor member Jerry Shaffer.

Mr. Barry played running back for the Pirates where he rushed for over 1200 yards, scored 13 td’s and averaged over 6.5 yards per carry his Senior year. He was part of the 1981 football team who set a school record at the time for most victories during the regular season with 10 straight wins and advanced to the quarterfinals. He was voted Co-Offensive MVP his senior year. “We had a terrific team. One of the most memorable games to me was the victory we had against Allen where we put ourselves in the driver’s seat to secure a district title and took back what we had lost from them the previous year. That was a slugfest of a game and I just remember the sheer joy we felt as a team and what we had just accomplished, there is nothing better than sharing that with your teammates.”

Mr. Barry was also an All District outfielder for the 1982 Pirate baseball team where they made a historic run during the state baseball playoffs by advancing all the way to the final four. His Pirate baseball team was the first team in Wylie history to advance to the semifinals of the Texas State Baseball playoffs. He was a teammate of fellow Hall of Honor members Kyle Craighead and Daniel Jones. He was coached by Hall of Honor member Sam Terry.

After graduating from Wylie in 1982, he went on to play football for the Stephen F. Austin State University Lumberjacks where he played strong safety under coach Jim Hess and graduated in 1986. He is married to his high school sweetheart and 1981 Wylie graduate Donna (Helmberger) Barry where they currently reside in St. Charles, IL - near Chicago. Mr. Barry is Director of Brand Sales for Laguna a division of Rolf C. Hagen (USA) Corp.
He and his wife Donna have four children. Alicia, a 2012 graduate of the University of Arkansas, Bryce, a 2014 graduate of Butler University, where he played linebacker for the Bulldog football team, Erienne who attends Boise State University and is a setter for the volleyball team and Brannon who attends Illinois State University and is a tight end for football team.

“I had outstanding coaches and teammates during my four years at Wylie and as you get older, you realize even more how important those relationships were and still are. We shared a great deal of success on the field, which was a direct correlation to what you do off of it and the life lessons you learn. To my fellow Pirates, soak in every drop of wisdom from your parents and coaches…you will need and use it, trust me! Cherish the moments you have with your teammates and embrace the challenges together, the time spent with them is fleeting, but the memories last a lifetime.”
